Birch Court, Oakland, California

Removing the walls and reconfiguring the kitchen led to this welcoming open plan. The new windows above the kitchen sink are located in the area formerly dedicated to the enclosed powder room and utility room, providing access to views of the gorgeous backyard. An eating island, expansive counters, and period-inspired finishes create a welcoming space appropriate in scale and aesthetic to the home. A relocated half- bath, customized built-in storage, and upgraded features throughout the house completed the owner’s to-do list.

Organizational Hub

Adding built-in shelving and a desk area to the wall opposite the new doors to the back yard, provides a functional and handsome hub for task management for a busy family of five. Features included the blackboard and nooks for organizing, phones, keys, files and supplies; located centrally between the kitchen and family room.

Pocket Door

This powder room features a frosted glass pocket door, bringing both space and light to the butler’s pantry / bar area niche. Constructing these rooms at the side of the house (between the kitchen and formal dining room) rather than at the back, these rooms gain in convenience and functionality.

A Matter of Scale

Installing a larger mantle and raised hearth for seating at the family room fireplace creates a strong focal point more appropriate to the scale of the room. Opening up the end wall to the eating area connects the entertaining spaces and invites natural light from the rear yard into this formerly dark room.

Creative Location

A custom wall unit built just outside the door to the master bathroom maximizes the storage space in this area adjoining the new master closet. Here again, the installation of a frosted glass recessed door provides a perfect solution for unimpeded flow of light while maintaining privacy and maximizing use of space.

Elegant Master Vanity

The built-in vanity, recessed medicine cabinets and mirror were designed to coordinate with the rest of the new master suite finishes. New, large walk-in shower and skylight are visible in the mirror.
