Oakvale, Berkeley California

A stately Craftsman home in Berkeley needed a major reconfiguration of spaces at the back of the house to take advantage of the rear garden. The complete remodel created an expansive new kitchen, reading nook, and office in place of the original kitchen, maid’s room and laundry. New windows, doors and seating areas adjacent to the outdoor areas connect the spaces. Craftsman-style woodwork and finishes maintain a unified period feel. A new awning built at the south elevation provides protection from both sun and rain.

Character and Harmony

Centering the new doors to the back garden in alignment with the entry doors to the formal dining room enables much-needed natural light to flow into the central portion of the house. Respecting the symmetry so often found in Craftsman architecture allows the updated kitchen to maintain harmony with the original character of the home.

Form and Function

Custom-built bookshelves provide a functional divide between the kitchen and the reading nook, nestled in a new bay window with views of the garden. The flow of light and open feel are continued by the French doors leading off of this space and into the private office, beyond.

Stylish Storage

Cabinets extend to the ceiling, providing the owner with maximum storage. The Shaker style and natural cherry finish enhance the warm feeling of the new kitchen design while maintaining a vintage tone.

Gather

The large island with solid walnut countertop takes center stage as the heart of the home, providing the owners with a communal place for family and friends to gather. A copper niche behind the stove and copper accents in the tile lend additional warmth and character to the kitchen.

A Line of Windows

The windows along kitchen and reading nook walls and adjacent office offer a continuous visual connection to the garden.

Copper Bar

Adjacent to the kitchen island on one side and dining area on the other, the wet bar is perfectly located for entertainment, enabling drink service to occur without impeding cooking activities. The hammered copper countertop showcases the elegant functionality of the material, while also echoing the copper accents in the backsplash tile.

Sun-Filled Master Bath

On the second floor, a master bathroom expansion delivers increased comfort and brightness. Gorgeous mosaic tile details in the floor and shower warmly reflect light.

Shower of Light

Two separate shower heads, custom bench, large recessed niche create a master shower to envy. The skylight above showers natural light.
