Remodel (Kitchen, Bathroom), Excavation
This Rockridge home, formerly owned by the proprietor of Ohmega Salvage, had all the character you would expect from a seller of rare, salvaged architectural materials. For the new owners, we adapted the home’s unique personality to their own tastes, transforming the house from a showcase of antique gems to an equally vibrant and interesting space for living, dining and gathering. By opening up the kitchen, for example, we were able to accommodate a modern fridge and create a spacious, open-plan dining room. New green trim freshened up the original wallpaper and tied it back to the bright, airy kitchen and sea-green tiles. An induction cooktop and recessed hood for the kitchen island add a distinctly modern touch. Downstairs, a basement excavation added a new foundation and 12 inches of height, transforming the dank, low-ceilinged bedrooms, laundry and former speakeasy bar into a large family room connected to a mid level mud room where double-doors open on the garden to let the kids tumble out and the light flow into both the upper and lower floors from the back of the house.We reimagined the floor plan of the primary bedroom to add an office space and bathroom with skylights that make the room sunny, colorful and fun. While the home has been modernized; the original copper laundry sink and historic bar preserve the special character of this Oakland original.
