Good design does more than create new spaces; it reflects and shapes the flow of family life. To accommodate a toddler and a baby on the way, we transformed this single-story, three-bedroom home into a four-bedroom two-story with adult-soothing rooms on the entry level and indestructible kid-friendly spaces below. We started by excavating the unfinished basement and locating a central stair to let beautiful light from the entry-level spill down into the kids’ area. On the entry level, the primary bedroom got a makeover with expanded space, a dreamy en suite bath with freestanding tub and a deck overlooking the garden. A dedicated guest bedroom/home office, redesigned kitchen, formal dining room and plenty of Craftsman details complete this peaceful haven. Downstairs, two new kids’ bedrooms, a family room, laundry room and play area can handle everything a boisterous family can dream up. Polished concrete floors with radiant heat give the space durable beauty, and access to the backyard extends the family’s living area to the outdoors. We worked closely with the interior designer to complete the renovation with classic, colorful and playful touches. Our renovation also included a single-car garage and storage space the family may eventually convert into an ADU. Because we understand that —even when the babies are grown— families never stop growing.
