Remodel, Basement Excavation, ADU

After raising their three children in this classic Elmwood Colonial Revival, our clients decided to upgrade their home for a more grownup lifestyle — while making sure the grown kids still have a place to land. Being an adult means entertaining without having to squeeze through dark, narrow corridors. Shifting the configuration of the main floor, we doubled the size of the kitchen and shifted the dining room to the opposite side of the house to improve the flow of light and movement. A refreshed bathroom on the main floor with an added shower adds beauty and function. Behind the kitchen wall, an improved staircase leads to the newly excavated basement ADU, with two bedrooms, a full kitchen and bathroom for now-grown children. The stained concrete floors at this lower level are modern, but the warm color evokes the wood floors at the main level above.  Both the main house and the ADU share access to the laundry and dog bath. Throughout, thoughtful details like the diamond-patterned kitchen window over the sink tie the new design back to the architectural style of the home our clients have loved for decades. Who says you can’t have it all?
