Residential Remodel, Addition
We have a knack for seeing more space than meets the eye. At this Lake Merritt-area bungalow, we doubled the living space without disturbing the original, 1920s facade by excavating the sloping rear yard to create a lower-level addition that connected the house to the same level as the backyard and optimizing expansive, south-facing views. On a smaller scale, we got creative with spaces for functional elements, tucking a central coat closet invisibly behind a custom painting and converting the cold air return into a comfy bench. Green design practices, including reclaimed tile and railings, new solar panels, radiant heat and blue jean insulation, went easy on the budget and the environment. With a clean, inventive design, family life never feels cluttered on Brooklyn Avenue.
