Residential, Remodel, Reconfiguration
A home renovation is an investment in a long-term vision. When our clients have a vision that’s bigger than their current resources allow, we are happy to design a project in phases that can be executed over time—like we did for this Berkeley remodel. A young family expecting their second child, our Dowling Place clients envisioned transforming their dark, warren-like Victorian into an open, light-filled space with access to the backyard from every room in the house. Our Phase 1 design opened the home to the back, with an eat-in kitchen nook and double doors with windows on either side to maximize light, creating a home that can host family gatherings and parties, and that allows their parents to see the kids from every room in the house.
A few years later, we returned to execute Phase 2 of our clients’ vision, turning a paint-smattered “artist’s studio” into a light-filled attic guest and entertainment room with a spectacular second-floor roof deck. Seeing our client’s complete vision from the outset allowed us to make the structural changes required to support the roof deck, and to go through the City of Berkeley planning and permitting process in advance, so that when our clients were ready for their new addition, we could get to work without delay.
