There’s nothing better than a big, beautiful backyard—except a big, beautiful backyard you can see all the way from the front of the house! After the owners of this Crocker Highlands English Tudor sent their two children off to college, they decided to expand their own horizons with a wide open floor plan. We started by blowing out all the walls between the front and back of the house to let the sunshine flow through. Now you can see the backyard from multiple locations throughout the house. The revised floor plan opened the kitchen to the dining room while preserving the character of the original archways. A new pathway through the house makes a visual and functional beeline for the backyard through glass double doors. We tucked a beverage station, pantry and half bath to the side of the kitchen, allowing surfaces in the main rooms to remain open and uncluttered. To make access to the backyard seamless, we leveled broken concrete and topped it with stone pavers, a cost-effective solution that also created an easy and level step from house to garden. A new foundation and drainage system will ensure a big beautiful backyard for today and beyond.
